Immigration touted as labour solution

Saskatchewan like other Canadian provinces is facing a labour shortage as baby boomers retire and industry grows.

“By 2011, we’re going to need 70,000 people joining our labour market,” said Rob Norris, Saskatchewan’s minister of advanced education, employment and labour.

The human resource shortage has hit many sectors from health care to construction to the fast food industry. Yet, there aren’t enough young people in this province to fill all the jobs.

This means Saskatchewan will have to start looking outside the province for workers. But neighbouring provinces have no people to spare as they are facing their own labour shortages. Saskatchewan employers have therefore begun recruiting abroad. Companies start their hunting for employees locally, but when this fails they expand their search internationally.
