Career Fields That Virtually Guaranteed a position In the Canadian Job Market

There’s been a lot of talk about high unemployment rates. However, there are certain fields in dire need of workers. Below are the professions where a job is nearly certain for those with an applicable degree or relevant work experience.

Health care

Health care-related positions dominated the top spots in recent study on university areas of study with the lowest unemployment rates, according to Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce. The top four majors included a medical technology technician, nursing, treatment therapy and a medical assistant. Other categories to break the top 25 included pharmacists, medical administrative services and health education professions. Not all health care fields are recession-proof, but the industry is certainly recession-resistant for the most part.

Jobs that require math skills continue to be in heavy demand. Besides teaching mathematics as a profession, there aren’t many jobs listed specifically as math-related, but fields with low unemployment rates that have a heavy math emphasis include mechanical engineering, physics, finance and electrical engineering. Unemployment rates in these categories were as low as 3.8 per cent and topped out at 5 per cent, which is still significantly below the U.S. nationwide average. Actuarial science, which is extremely heavily math-oriented, has been estimated to nearly guarantee a job for those that major in it and pass the exams required to gain a designation as an actuary.

Other solid areas to pursue include geosciences and criminal justice, the last of which can require a heavy science emphasis.

A Toronto University study entitled Not all college degrees are created equal can provide further insight into the fields that offer the best opportunities for employment after graduation. The reality is that employment rates vary because of many factors, be it geography, age of the job seeker and education level. Rates can actually vary widely based on these factors. For instance, those pursuing employment in the architectural field can see unemployment rates in a range of 7.7 per cent and 13.9 per cent, based on the factors mentioned above.

As one might expect, individuals with graduate degrees generally find it easier to find jobs, as do those with relevant work experience. Still, there are professions to pursue for those without work experience. Sticking to the above categories can definitely help more recent graduates.

  1. Create a professional sounding new email address that is dedicated to job search. This will allow you to register with various sites, without clogging your personal email with new incoming emails.
  2. Don’t use too many job sites. Be selective and limit your search to those sites which are most effective for your particular purposes.
  3. Keep organised — make a list (a Word document might be all you need) of all the sites you are using, with the links, so you can check them regularly. Some job searchers have found career management sites such as Jibber Jobber helpful to manage their online job search process.
  4. Don’t forget to switch off the computer and go out to meet employers face to face. Ultimately, this is how many jobs are found and how you will, most likely, be noticed by an employer.

10. Private equity or wealth firms. Recruiters report that private equity firms are actively seeking management talent for their portfolio companies “across all industries and all functional areas. “They’re poaching already-employed, seasoned managers from big companies — people who can step into either a turnaround situation or a pre-IPO company and make it work. These are challenging jobs, and could be a real feather in a manager’s cap if he or she can bring it off successfully.”

As the economy worsens, contract jobs are becoming more and more numerous. Offering contract jobs saves larger companies the time of looking for and hiring new employees as well as the money that a regular employee would receive in benefits. Also, a contract job may be seen as a sort of trial by fire, after which a contract employee may be offered a more permanent position.

Due to  months of searching, your first concrete job offer has come in. It’s a contract job that you wouldn’t have considered a year ago, but you’ve decided to accept. Six months with a reputable firm seems like a safe haven in turbulent times. Besides, it’s a foot in the door and could lead to more.

Not all contract positions have long-term potential, but some do.  Employers offer contract work to be upfront and honest.

“They’re letting people know that they have some work now and could down the road, but they’re not sure.

Nature of Contract Jobs
Contract jobs are not permanent positions, but that doesn’t mean that the job won’t take weeks, months or sometimes years to complete. A contract job could be something as simple as organizing an office, which could take days, or as complicated as building a skyscraper, a project that will take years. The longer the contract, often the more money involved to pay the workers and to cover other expenses.

The most common sort of contract employee are temps, or temporary employees. An organization that needs to fill temporary openings will often use a staffing agency, which is a company that keeps lists of employees who work in a certain type of field. Substitute teachers, secretaries, office workers and others can all be temps. If an opening needs to be filled, a temp agency will call up any of those people who are on the list and ask them if they’d like to take the temporary position that’s currently available. The staffing agency simply goes down the list until finding someone willing to take the job for its client.

Freelance workers, like those the name is taken from, are mercenaries. These are often small agencies, or independent workers who will do work on an assignment by assignment basis for a company. Writers, private security and advertising executives may be freelance workers. Freelancers are those who usually have some skill that is desired for a specific project, which is what makes them different from temps, who usually do unskilled labor or office work.

Contract jobs have surged since 1997 and increased between 2005 and 2009 despite the downturn, a Statistics Canada paper released Friday shows. Last year, nearly 1 million Canadian workers held this type of job.

Secrets of Successful Immigrants In Canada

Immigrants are good for Canadian economy. The most skilled create jobs in technology and engineering. 2009 immigrant-founded engineering and tech companies employed more than 150,000 people and generated $25 billion in sales. Immigrants contribute to the economic growth of their host countries in many ways, bringing new skills and competencies with them and helping to reduce labour shortages.

Immigrant entrepreneurship has gone beyond traditional ethnic businesses, into a wide range of sectors and innovative areas.   Is there a market here for skilled labour? Actually, Canada is seeing signs of worker shortages in several professions – including engineers, doctors and nurses, to name a few. Added to this is the fact that the population in some provinces is shrinking, and employers are having difficulty filling their rosters with skilled help. Paul Darby, director of the Conference Board of Canada, estimates a shortfall of 3 million skilled workers by the year 2020.

Get in the wagon of  Entreprenuership and Employment Creation of  Immigrants.

The Canadian government issues immigrant visas to business immigrants who qualify under the Business Immigration program.  There are three categories of business immigrants: Entrepreneurs, Investors and Self-Employed persons.  Each program has its own criteria for selection, and require Business Experience as defined in the immigration regulations.     An Entrepreneur must have a minimum of two years of business management and ownership of a percentage of equity in a business within the past 5 years.  The business must meet certain specified criteria that relate to the number of employees, the total annual revenue, net income and net assets.  The entrepreneur must also demonstrate a personal net worth of at least $300,000 CAD.  If the applicant meets these criteria, then he or she will be issued an immigrant visa and become a permanent resident subject to the condition that he or she starts or purchases a business that meets certain minimum requirements for any one year period within the first 3 years of becoming a permanent resident.  If the conditions are met then they are lifted, if they are not met then the immigration department may take steps to attempt to remove the permanent residence status.

An Investor must have a minimum personal net worth of at least $1,600,000 CAD that has been legally obtained, and meet the specified criteria regarding past business ownership or management.  If these criteria are met, then he or she must invest $800,000 in a government guaranteed investor fund for a five year period.  During those 5 years there is no interest paid on this money, but the return of the principal to the applicant is guaranteed by the government.  Financing is available for the investment amount.  There are no conditions attached to the permanent residence status of an investor.

The Self-Employed category requires an ability to be self-employed in Canada in the field of cultural activities, athletics or the purchase and management of a farm.  The applicant must have experience in one of these areas and if successful, will be issued an immigrant visa that is not subject to any terms and conditions.
