FINDING A JOB IN CANADA Occupations in Canada Non-Regulated fields(I)

It is pretty clear that many new immigrants are having a long and difficult time getting established in their chosen occupations. While there are many causes including economic, political and social, these solutions are a collective struggle and need to be solved at a community level. They are usually beyond the control of the individual.

It’s extremely important to gain Canadian Experience.

 If I’m an Accountant, I’ll catch hold of a Asst. Bookkeeper’s task, or a financial data entry operator, or a departmental assistant. The combinations can be many. The requirement is, now start building your career. Opportunities shall commence.

!-Stage Criteria: Land a job in your related field. The designation be anything, be much lower -but must be taken.
!-Remember: Ppl will start knowing us in our field & thus professional growth is imminent.
!-Job Search: Full-fledged ‘job hunting’. This hunting now is in our choice occupation.
!-Timeframe: 6-12 months.

1. So get Canadian Work or Cultural Experience

 You can do this in a number of ways. While no one wants to work for free, you may want to consider this for a short while. Volunteering in the area you want to work will help you prove that you know what is expected and will give you some contacts in the field.

2. Networking:

Join Canadian community groups, professional associations, interest clubs, sports teams or any other groupings that will put you in contact with people you wouldn’t ordinarily meet. Shy? start in Linkedin.
 

3. Language Ability

A high level of English and French , official Canadian languages.  Thiose languages ability is necessary in many Canadian work settings, particularly those that involve writing or customer service.

4. Cultural Differences and Prohibitions

 Some cultural and religious prohibitions can be real obstacles and others are hardly noticed. No matter how well-dressed you feel. Clothing style doesn’t have to be a problem. Cross cultural training?   Check this   out

5. Obligations

Individuals have a greater obligation to society than themselves. This is because society is a group of individuals working for the common benefit, and thus one must put oneself below others in order for this system to work correctly. Society is based upon individuals helping one another in order to have a collected benefit.

All new immigrants need to know their rights as permanent residents and the steps to become a Canadian Citizen. From the beginning they should take a Canadian Immigrant Orientation Program.

SOLUTIONS TO FINDING A JOB IN CANADA

A) Get a Portfolio/ Profesional Résumé

All education and work experience can attest to your abilities and work ethic, but you have to be the one to demonstrate this. You can do this in the way you write your résumé and in what you say in an interview.

Keep track of all your courses, contacts, achievements etc. You never know when you will need something.

Your professional portfolio can also help you remember the courses you have taken, committees you have served on and successes you have had.

B) Research:
Figure out what job descriptions match your skills and passions. Targeting some potential employers, determine your long-term and short-term career goals.

You may not find a perfect match, but with some creativity you should at least be able to find a job that will put you on the right track or help you gain the skills you will need to achieve your long-term goal.

When you put together your cover letter and resume, tailor them to the company’s mission.

Employers aren’t interested in people who sound desperate (and willing to do anything) to get a foot in the door. You need to clearly identify a job that interests you — and that you are qualified for —
 

C) Career Shift:

Becoming an immigrant is an opportunity to select and change careers. If you are considering a career move, you may want to consider a field that calls for certification.

You may want to research those fields that the economic forecasters say are expanding. You won’t want to try and compete in a very crowded field unless you are excellent at it and can prove it. How can your past experiences and education contribute to a new field? If you were an architect in your own country, would you consider training as a building inspector or a mortgage broker? If you were a physician, would you train in occupational health and safety? Sometimes a course or two is all that is needed rather than a different degree or diploma.

D) Interviews

Prepare yourself for this very important event.

1.Come prepared with a question or two even if you don’t have one. You may be asked if you have a question and, “no” could make you sound disinterested or unreflective. Also come prepared for tough questions such as asking you to speak about your weaknesses or long-range career goals.

2.  Not only will you need  to research the company, but practice answers that reflect your best achievements and qualifications but turn your answers into memorable short stories so the interviewer won’t forget you.
All job-seekers need to conduct research and develop critical information about each company — its products and services; key executives; new products, plants, or divisions; company culture; organizational structure; diversity and values; benefits; career paths; etc.

What’s the best source of  Canadian company information ? The company’s Website, of course! It’s absolutely amazing what you can find published on company Websites. You can either try directly entering the company name in your favorite browser.

The best source for conducting your initial Canadian company research is Hineni Database,  published by Hineni Media. This database, updated annually, provides general information about types of jobs within a large number of occupations; the outlook for job growth; working conditions; average earnings; education and training required; related occupations specially for internationally trained professionals; and sources for finding more information. From there, I would locate the professional organizations for those careers. For example, if you were interested in marketing as a career, I would recommend contacting the Canadian Marketing Association to learn more about careers in marketing. To get salary information for a specific geographic location, I would use one of the many salary calculators available online.

So, do your research, polish your job-search materials, network, and go after a specific job. And be sure to follow-up each and every job lead — until you land that job.

Alternative option to the Federal Skill Worker Application

 As of  June 26, 2010 the Canadian government introduced a cap of 20,000 applications to be considered per year under the Federal Skilled Worker program. This cap applies to those who do not have an offer of arranged employment in Canada. The first year will begin on June 26, 2010, and end on June 30, 2011.   

Within the 20,000 Federal Skilled Worker application cap, a maximum of 1,000 applications per eligible occupation will be considered each year. Also of important note is that the eligible National Occupation Classification Code list for Federal Skilled Worker Applications has changed and been reduced from 38 to 29 occupations.

Requests made on the basis of Humanitarian and Compassionate grounds that accompany a Federal Skilled Worker application not identified for processing will not be processed.

As with the Federal Skilled Worker program, applications submitted under the Canadian Experience Class must be accompanied by the results of the principal applicant’s English or French language proficiency. Only assessments from a third-party language testing agency designated by the Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism will be accepted.  An good alternative is the Business & Investment Immigration.

The Canadian Experience Class

The Canadian Experience Class, (CEC), will allow certain highly skilled temporary workers and international students, already living in Canda to remain in Canada while they apply for permanent residence without having to file their applications abroad.
The program contains the following elements:

  • The program is limited to those who have legally entered Canada. Undocumented workers and those without continued legal status will not have access to the program.
  • It is limited to those candidates with work experience defined by the National Occupational Classification NOC Levels of 0, A and B.
  • The selection criteria is based on an assessment of an applicant’s successful labour market integration.
  • Criteria includes a mix of Canadian educational credentials, work experience in Canada and language proficiency in either of Canada’s official languages.
  • valid status in Canada is required at the time of an application
  • at least a moderate language proficiency in one of Canada’s two official languages documented by IELTS and/or TEF, is also required
  • no proof of funds is required
  • for recent graduates at Canadian post-secondary institutions, they must have completed at least 2 years of post-secondary study program at the institution qualifying for post-graduate work permit and at least 12 months of work experience in Canada acquired after graduation (but within 2 years prior to CEC application) and exclusively in NOC Skill Levels 0, A or B.
  • for work permit holders – at least secondary school diploma, trade certificate or apprenticeship required plus 2 years of full time work experience in Canada in skills level 0, A or B acquired within 3 years prior to CEC application.

Immigrant Entrepreneuers in Canada

What to look when buying a business
On the surface it seems like a sure-fire winning formula for an aspiring entrepreneur: Buying an existing profitable business and the money should keep rolling in, right? Not quite. Experts remind aspiring small business owners that past performance is no guarantee of future profits no matter how great the acquisition target seems to be.

“The first rule of buying a business is due diligence,” said Mary Diaz, Hineni’s CEO director or financial accounts. “The second rule is to see rule number one.”

Due diligence is an umbrella encompassing an enormous amount of information that would-be entrepreneurs need to gather before they even make an offer to buy a business.

“The critical thing a buyer needs to ask is can they run this business?’ ” Diaz said. “Do they have adequate training, the right kind of background, skills and the right chemistry to get involved?”

Prospective buyers need to take an in-depth look at the financial picture of the company they want to acquire, going back as far as seven years, if possible, to spot any financial trends occurring.

“If all of a sudden we see a blip of changes within the last couple of years to groom the company for sale, we want to delve into those and find out what happened,” he said.

Skeletons in the closet

Buyers need to analyze financial trends and that means getting all the tax returns, federal and provincial, as possible from the company and pouring over them. Enlisting the aid of a tax professional can help them sift through the sea of data otherwise they’ll make a costly decision without having all the facts. This can often be dangerous, especially when they don’t know what skeletons companies have hidden in the closet.

Unless there’s a very beneficial reason for buying the corporation, diaz says buyers are much better off just purchasing the assets which is much more advantageous tax-wise.

“If it’s a franchise opportunity, any goodwill that’s purchased can be written-off over 15 years,” she said.

Basically, when someone wants to buy a business it behooves them to do everything in their power to ensure they have not overlooked any detail because once a deal is done it’s very difficult to untangle a poorly structured acquisition. Diaz noted that she’s been called in a number of times over the years by clients after the deal was completed but by then it was too late.

“You really have to be there at the beginning of the process reevaluating and restructuring,” she said. “When people don’t bring a professional on early in the process and the deal is structured incorrectly, they lose an enormous amount of tax breaks.”

Often times, the success a business enjoyed was largely due to its owner and when the proprietor leaves after the sale is made, Diaz says the business walks right out the door with them.

“We’re really cognizant of the fact that the business really has to be tangible,” he said.

Put yourself in the seller’s shoes

It’s important for the buyer to have a team of qualified advisors including a business counselor, banker and an attorney standing by so they can provide the right counseling from a tax, lending and legal standpoint.

“It may cost you a few dollars going in but it will save you thousands,” he said.

Another aspect to consider is to look at the environment of the business itself. If it’s a restaurant, are there any plans to close the road in front? Are there any environmental issues on the property? Is it contaminated? Are there going to be laws or regulations that could affect the ongoing business? All these questions need to be addressed before a buyer signs on the dotted line.

In one area that’s sometimes overlooked, key employees have to be treated with respect and handled with care. Buyers have to be upfront with employees and let them know how the change of ownership is going to benefit them and improve their careers. New owners need to work with staff to get them through the changes which are always difficult and stressful so that they remain with the business.

Obviously, it’s a very detailed process when considering buying a business.

“You literally have to put yourself in the seller’s shoes and find out what is driving this business and what makes it run,” Rosenbaum said. “You have to be in a position to replicate that process.”

Don’t spread your business too thin

Williams Mercado, a business development manager in Fiducial’s New York City headquarters, ( Bronx) maintains that buyers with an existing company should look at potential synergies at the targeted acquisition that could reduce some of their costs. These include the potential for growth through complementary product lines along with ways to expand both vertically and horizontally with the acquisition.

“In addition, look at the possibility for geographic locations of where you are and where you are not,” said Leopold, a former investment banker. “Does it make sense to expand or target certain areas?”

The prevalent strategy for a small business owner is to be strong in one geographic area and expand later rather than going out all over the place which requires more coordination and resources, and a better integrated platform.

“As a small business you grow locally and afterwards try to expand geographically beyond the local area,” he said.

So what should a small business owner consider when considering growing their business?

According to Mercado, they have to find a good balance on a case-by-case basis between organic growth where the business grows itself and external growth where they expand by acquiring an outside company.

But external growth may also represent a significant challenge for a small business to achieve since they need to have access to the external financial resources necessary to carry off the deal.

“The risk is basically not to spread yourself too thin by only growing through acquisition because if you don’t have the balance between organic and external growth, you might not be able to manage it in the long-term,” he said. “It could backfire.”

Getting the deal done

Asked what types of businesses are prime acquisition targets, Mercado says those companies founded by passionate entrepreneurs are usually good bets, regardless of the industry.

“People are successful because they do what they do with passion,” he said.

Mercado also recommends that entrepreneurs ready to buy a business should have a circle of trusted advisors at hand such as an accountant and lawyer to assist them through this painstaking, emotional process.

“Advisors basically make the difference between emotions and what needs to be done to get the deal done,” he said. “For a small business owner who puts so much of his heart and time in the business— the long hours and private sacrifices—it’s extremely important that this person is well-advised so that his interests are better protected and emotions don’t take over.”

Diaz added that  Financial advisors take the acquisition process from an emotional to an analytical event.

“We bridge that gap, analyze the numbers and the market to make sure that the buyer knows what they’re getting into rather than dealing with emotion,” he said.

‘You can’t wait forever’

Another avenue to thoroughly explore before making an offer is checking whether existing employees have a non-compete agreement so buyers don’t purchase a business and all the employees leave and set up a similar venture.

“In that instance they take the clients and you pay for them,” said  Luz Pardo, district marketing manager for Light your Life’s  Greater Toronto ,ON, region.

Pardo a succcesful women entreprenuer cautioned buyers to have their professional advisors dig extensively into the businesses’ tax returns because the financial statement presented showing prior years aren’t necessarily what was filed with the CRA. He cited an example of an entrepreneur who bought a company but their business broker is now being sued since they didn’t go into the depth required on the taxes.

“You’d be surprised at what you find on the tax returns,” he said. “I’ve seen it happen when we acquire or get a new client and their records from the other accountant are different.”

Perhaps the best rule of thumb for buying a business is to purchase a company in an industry that you know something about.

“If you’re an accountant, relate it [the buy] to how many tax returns you did last year,” she said.

Among the riskier enterprises to buy are restaurants and bars because embezzlement thrives in an atmosphere where things are going out the door that customers aren’t charged for. For instance, waitresses may collect tips from patrons instead of actually collecting money for food or beverages served.

Buyers also have to be aware of what the competition is doing in the industry where the company they want to acquire is doing business. Each company has its own tricks of the trade so make sure that those remain part of the deal.

“Check on whether there’s a special patented process where you could take the formula,” he said.

With many first-time entrepreneurs exiting from the corporate ranks and going into business for themselves, Luz Pardo pointed out a recent survey indicating that 65% of small business owners would tell a friend to launch a new venture now rather than wait another year.

“You can’t wait forever,” he said.
