Best way to get your resume notice as minority

With employers receiving hundreds of resumes in Canada you must make sure that your resume hooks an employer’s attention within a 5-second glance. A great way to do this is to use job titles and skill headings that relate to and match the jobs you want. Once you find the companies or employers ads that interest you remember you need to tweak and target your resume and cover letters, along with prioritizing the content of it.

LinkedIn is a great resource to find jobs online in Canada  if used effectively. However, many people do not know how to use it – especially new immigrants! Use Design That Grabs Attention:  highlight the most important information about your work experience, skills and education and upload your resume to your LinkedIn account.

Create Content That Sells: Direct the attention to what it’s really the content of your resume, include descriptions of your skills and abilities.

Quantify and Use Power Words: use Power Words or verbs that match the level of position you want.

Job Titles: Sales Manager, Laboratory Assistant, Customer Service Representative

Education: Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, M.A. in English Literature, Juris Doctor

Skills: Business Consulting, Legal Research, Marketing Development

Certification: CPA, CNA

Computer Terms: Microsoft Access, C#, AutoCAD

 Analyze Ads and Job Descriptions to Identify Key Words:  Learn to how to analyze the key words that employers provide in help wanted ads and job descriptions.

Identify and Solve Employer’s Hidden Needs:  identify and anticipate the full range of needs each employer faces and show how you can solve those needs.
