Immigrants: Starting a business in Canada

The Immigrant Entrepreneur Visa Category is intended for prospective immigrants who propose to establish a new business or who propose to purchase all or part of an existing business that has supportable prospects for expansion in any province in Canada

 The Canadian goverment  is also ramping up our support for immigrant entrepreneurs, those  who’ve long been a tremendous source of innovation in  Canada.  Immigrants are twice as likely as native-born  Canadian to start companies – although a greater proportion also struggle to keep their businesses open for longer than a year.  That’s why  the Canadian goverment has been creating  a new competition that challenges community-based organizations to come up with programs that can help immigrant businesses across the city grow to scale.  At the same time,  in many provinces the Canadian goverment is has been offering some of  its  business courses and programs  in Chinese, Korean, Spanish, and Russian – which will allow us to connect to hundreds of new businesses in our immigrant communities.  There are four types of entrepreneurs who contribute substantially to economic development and job creation in Canada.

The categories are not mutually exclusive as some business characteristics can be found across these typologies but they do have distinct characteristics.

  • Immigrant Neighborhood Storefront Businesses
  • Immigrant High-Tech and Health Science Entrepreneurs/Innovators.
  • Immigrant Non-Tech Growth Businesses
  • Immigrant Transnational Businesses

1. Immigrant Neighborhood Storefront Businesses:  These are low-to-moderate-income (LMI) businesses, largely retail and personal services. They start small and frequently stay small and usually locate their businesses in economically distressed areas with lower rents. .eg. http://tortillerialamexicana.ca/

This group has special challenges that include limited English; low familiarity with Canadian cultural and business practices; little or no credit history and little or no business and/or management education.

 The businesses are alternatives to wage employment and involve extremely long hours and hard work. Employees are more often than not other family members. The goal of the business owners, often called “Necessity Entrepreneurs”, is to make a life for themselves, their families and to ensure their children’s future. They usually do not expect to pass on the business to their children and frequently note that they are working extraordinarily hard so their children can get an education and not have to work as hard. However, some of these business owners are interested in expanding their businesses into multiple locations and/or allied businesses in which the children may be involved.

2. Immigrant High-Tech and Health Science Entrepreneurs/Innovators

These entrepreneurs apply their scientific education and expertise to the creation of a product or service in technology or medical drugs/treatments. The goal of the business owner is often, but not always, to develop the technology and have it acquired by a larger company clearing the way for creating new products and services.

3. Immigrant Non-Tech Growth Businesses
These are businesses in real estate, manufacturing, retail, wholesale, transportation, construction, leisure and hospitality, etc. They are the core businesses that drive the province, regional and national economies and become important employers in their community and province.

These businesses are credited with revitalizing economically depressed neighborhoods and communities. These business owners are interested in expanding their businesses into multiple locations and/or allied businesses in which the children may be involved.

4. Immigrant Transnational Businesses

These businesses are a new phenomenon of “Keeping Feet in Both Worlds”. Immigrant transnationalism refers to the regular engagement in economic, political and socio-cultural activities spanning national borders.

These transnational entrepreneurs are playing an important role in facilitating international trade, investment and “diaspora tourism”. They are a heterogeneous group coming from many countries, crossing ethnic, immigrant and minority boundaries possessing different motivations and experiences.  Now within it , there are four distinct types of immigrant transnational enterprises: Circuit firms involved in the transfer of goods and remittances across countries; Cultural enterprises that rely on their daily contacts with the home country and depend on the desire of immigrants for cultural goods in Canada such as shows, CDs and newspapers; Ethnic enterprises that are small retail firms catering to the immigrant community, which depends on a steady supply of imported goods; Return migrant enterprises that are businesses established by returnees that rely on their contacts in Canada.

Immigrant Small Business Loan Program

Through a partnership with the Nova Scotia Co-operative Council and the Government of Nova Scotia, credit unions are offering a small business loan program   that aims to help immigrants who are interested in starting, expanding or buying a small business.

This pilot project, which is available exclusively through credit unions, is a joint initiative of the Nova Scotia Co-operative Council, Credit Union Central of Nova Scotia, local credit unions, the Department of Economic and Rural Development and the Office of Immigration.

The Immigrant Small Business Loan Program is an extension of the Small Business Financing Program, also administered by the Nova Scotia Co-operative Council through credit unions.

Where is this program available?
The program is available across Nova Scotia, through credit unions only.

How do I apply?
Visit a credit union in your area. To find the credit union nearest you, visit www.nscreditunions.ca

What will the credit union require?
The credit union requires a business plan that shows the viability of your business idea. You will also be asked to provide information regarding your net worth, credit history, confirmation of assets, and other documents that are normally required when applying for a business loan.

Does my past credit history count?
Credit history is an important piece of your identity. All financial institutions will check your credit history when you apply for credit of any kind. A credit history report however, is not the only criteria used by a credit union to make a lending decision. Those with credit history issues are still eligible to apply under the Small Business Financing for Immigrant Entrepreneurs program.

Will I need to give personal security or guarantees to the credit union?
Yes. The credit union will evaluate your loan request by following regular credit lending criteria. This will include an assessment of your personal net worth. If your application does not fit normal lending criteria, but the credit union feels your business has potential for success, the credit union can apply for a loan guarantee to offset their risk. The maximum amount of the loan guarantee will be 90 per cent of the value of the loan, up to a maximum of $150,000.

How much can an immigrant entrepreneur borrow?
Under this program, the maximum amount that can be borrowed is $150,000.

What kind of financing does this program cover?
The program can cover loans that are of a traditional debt nature, for working capital or lines of credit.

Are there any restrictions on the type of business eligible?
All types of business are eligible except residential and commercial real estate, beverage rooms and taverns. Also, any venture of a questionable ethical or legal nature, or businesses deemed to be not in the best interest of the Province, will be ineligible. Each application is evaluated on a case-by-case basis, based on the business plan and viability.

What are the terms of a loan?
The terms and conditions of the loan will be negotiated between you and the credit union. The maximum term under this program is seven years.

What is the interest rate?
The interest rate is negotiated between you and the credit union, but will not exceed 12 per cent.

Is there a fee to access this program?
You are required to pay a one per cent administration fee annually, based on the total value outstanding on the loan. This one per cent is a guarantee fee that is remitted by the credit union to the provincial Department of Finance.

Are personal loans eligible?
No. The program only applies to business ventures.

Are there any other requirements under this program?
Access to capital is only one element necessary for business success. Management skills and financial literacy, in addition to a solid business plan are also important. The credit union will assess the strength and validity of the business case being presented, as well as the management strengths and financial literacy of the proponent. If weaknesses are identified, for example, a lack of management expertise, the credit union may request that you have a business mentor as a condition of the loan, and/or request other training such as management, basic financial literacy etc, before a loan is disbursed.

Is there any support available if I need help with putting my business plan and application together?
The Nova Scotia Co-operative Council can assist you with accessing the technical assistance you require to strengthen your plan. You will be referred to other partner agencies who already provide these services.

However, you need to truly love  Canadian and  Canada  to find a job as foreign job seeker, because jobs are not abundantly present and salaries are not too high in this economy.

Job hunting in Canada

One of the best ways of finding work  in Canada you’ll soon discover is through networking. For an outsider, developing such contacts may be difficult at first.  Try to volunteer. Volunteering can be the antidote to diminished self-esteem, and  it also gets you well connected. You develop a network with other volunteers and agencies so there are shared core values.

However, perseverance after that is often rewarded, as the initiative demonstrated is in itself a recommendation. Speculative applications are likewise often successful.  When you apply for a job make use of a very formal style for your letter and include impressive references with your speculative application. In particular, when accompanied by a good recommendation (“Mentor”) from someone familiar to the company, such as a comunity or social worker,  university professor, a friend, a member of the family, or a company executive, your speculative application stands a greater chance.  An introduction of a well-known person is extremely effective, know that because in Canada the emphasis is more on ‘who’ you know, than on ‘what’ you know (although as a foreign job seeker the right qualifications are essential, even if you have some distant Canadians relatives …).

The Cover Letter
In general a  cover letter  should create enough interest to make the potential employer want to look at your application in more detail and hopefully invite you for an interview. Your cover letter, however, should not provide too much information about experience and qualifications; this will be provided in your Resume.

The style of the covering letter must be  conventional and formal, almost with stately English or French language. Explain briefly what can you do for the company and why you are interested in the job and the company. But leave the full explanation about your  deep motivation until the interview when it can be given orally. In  Canada, the information will be better  presented in verbal form. It’s also a test of your language or  communications skills.  Likewise, copies of  certificates, diplomas and references should not be bring or sent together with your cover letter and  resume (CV), but should be brought to the first interview. Of course, if you have really impressive testimonials do send them with your letter.

The covering letter must be typed -  Never an employer  will requests a hand-written letter. The letter should be kept short (1/2 to maximum one page). Application forms are hardly used, except by some (foreign) multi-national firms.

The recruitment process tends to be tedious (long or boring), up to two months. You should check carefully what kind of time delay to expect for a response.

The Resume, Portafolio o Curriculum Vitae (CV)
There are no strict rules for resumes  in Canada. But a resume is best received when it is brief,  two pages long ¬ AND NOT MORE. although online portafolios of four or five pages are not uncommon either ¬ and in chronological order Do not include in your personal details such as your date and place of birth, your nationality,  or your civil status. Do make sure that  your telephone number (including international access code) are. Hobbies are mentioned in your resume  A photo is not requested.

The Application Procedure
The recruitment procedure usually consists of two to three interviews and some psychometric, skills tests. Be prepared for questions about your motivation. As far as qualities are concerned Canadiann employers look for enthusiasm, communication and relationship skills. A fairly informal atmosphere is general, with each recruiting officer following his/her own, usually intuitive style. Only if the personality of the candidate is deemed apt, the recruiter will continue to look at his/her professional experience. Hence the importance to establish good personal rapport during the interview for the interviewee.

Pay a lot of attention to your appearance for the interviews; image says a lot . The way you are dressed is of significant importance for a Canadian employer, it shows your true interest for the job! Salaries are rarely discussed at the first interview, and please do not ask for this!
